I live about 20 km from Plzen, close to Dobřany (Vstiš), well, only temporarily, we're building a new lovely house in Dobřany and Vstiš is only a provisional asylum :-)))

I know Druztova, there should be a bridge over the Berounka river, shouldn't be? If I am not mistaken we started our sailing there in the summer. We borrowed a small canoe and rode down the river when there was a bit more water than usually. It was my first ride and I loved it. Few weeks later we went for a week-long trip on Vltava.

Yes, you are right, RR is like a horse. He has more than 40 kg but I still call him "Mimi, miminko, mimule" etc. We have one more dog, a German shepard, veteran from the army, he is 10 years old and serves like an older brother or uncle to this puppy. But he has arthrosis and cannot run as fast as the RR, therefore I am looking for some other dog friends.

Tosa inu? I don't know that breed. I will look it up... Do you have a dog, too?

Sure :cool: I studied at the Masaryk university, Faculty of Arts (Department of English and American Studies) and I also spent one year in the USA studying over there. But I am still aware of many mistakes. Namely when talking, I tend to slip to slang or academics but I am missing the "golden middle way". :dumbom: I learnt Southern dialect and slang in the USA and academics at the university.

wow that sounds good, very good :) I do many mistakes too. But I try to do my best, I learn english since I was seven and I spent aslo one year in sunny california as an au-pair. and now I use english every day in my emails. My biggest problem are tenses...I hate it :D

well I work in company at business and logistic department a bit suck because of lots of over times... and you?

I am freelance translator, currently working on some military-management stuff which just drives me crazy because of all the managerial babble (processes, applications, procedures, systems, aspects, elements...gosh!!!) But otherwise, it's great and I kinda love my job :-D

Veranna, I don´t need to speak Finnish (luckily), it´s such a horrible language, they are satisfied with my English. But one Czech colleague of mine does speak Finnish as he is an interpereter too and I really admire him. How did I get to this job? They have found me! What a lucky people!!! :-)

I am a freelance translator, I simply applied for the trading license, passed some exams and here I am turning my 6th year in this industry :-)

Well, nothing special, it is not much different from another assistant job - I do everything for everyone - confirmations of cultural invitations, work with PC - but not only internet here is no one good at common programmes such as Excel, Word or Microsoft Outlook so I had to organize first the communcation within offices (shared calendars, contacts and so on), writing official notes, organize meetings and invitations of some special Finnish occasions, making coffee... and many other duties :-) Sometimes it is quite boring sometimes I love it! I have been working here for 2 years. But basically I´m satisfied.

That sounds good... And above all, you are satisfied with it. That does not happen to everybody. have yu every been to Finland?

Hello, everybody today we have such a lovely day :-)

Not for me.. had a terrible night full of nightmares and now I am struggleing with a stupid text for translation while looking enviously out of my window ... nice weather outside..

Nightmares?? How come? Are you stressed out from something? Have a cup of coffee, turn the radio on and relax for couple of minutes :-) I´d love to stay with my baby boy rather than be at work or at least to be at work but just half shift and then be around my son. I would take him for a walk in this lovely shiny morning. But he stays with his father as he can work at home, we decided to earn more money so I had to make hard decision. Well I love to be at work but I´d love to raise my child too. Do you understand what I mean? I´ll see how it goes... But now I´m sitting here drinking coffee, chating for a while and enjoying it! Do the same:-)

I´d love to do something as translation work, I know that it is not about sitting with vocabulary but about some special software and of course about some knowledges too. I think I would be able to do such a thing but don´t know how to come to this. Many times I planned to pass some exams with certifikates but never had time for it, you know what i mean. Could you advise me how to start?

so you are actually at work now? Or you plan to return to work soon? I am sure you will divide your duties so that you were happy at work and happy at home. We don't have kids yet and planning to... perhaps in a year or so. We have discussed the topic already but since I can work at home I will be in major charge of the kid and household and my husband will go to work very early in the morning and come back shortly after the lunch so that I could have some time to spend on my business too. I canno afford to loose clients. I have been building the clientele for 6 years and this would be a complete disaster for me. So that's for the plans. I ams ure the reality will be completely different :lol:
I gotta finish the job, be back in a while...

Well, I´m working at the Embassy as I have mentioned above and still I´m officialy at home with the baby but I have got trade certifikate too so at the moment I´m helping with the office to my fiance´s friend so actually I´m working:-) Do you understand it? I have started here in October and will finish in December, hope we will spend few days together on Christmas time and than I will start at the Embassy again.

Life changes completely with the baby and sometimes it is not possible to combine or plan something and the other thing is that the parents are tired too especially mother. It took me long time to get some routine and to get use to another regime. When I was finally happy with the baby we swapped the roles with my fiance and now he is home with Mikuláš and he is hoping to do some work (but to say the truth he can´t do much, he needs someone to keep an eye on the baby so he could do the job). So he can do work only after my return. And another important thing is to have grandparents! Or someone from family who would be able to take care of the child from time to time - it is so much helpfull, for relax of for anything else. We don´t have family around.

Where exactly in Florida are you? I spent more than one year in Blountstown close to Panama City, more or less the north-west of FL. And you?

Oh yeah, Blountstown, small town in Panhandle. How long ago did you live here? Have you made it to Apalachicola National Forest? I would love to do some camping there one day soon.

It was in 1998-99. There I sobered up from American enthusiasm and their "American dream". I always say I had to spent almost two years in the USA to become local patriot :D :D
But Tampa was nice, lots of clubs and quite good ice-hockey team ...

Dear Sunyata, no, I did not go there. I was studying there and was rather limited by time. We did some trips, though, but mostly outside Florida to see the most remarkable places in the USA (Grand Canyon, Navajo reservations, Petrified Forests etc.) Then I spent about two weeks in NY.
But if you do go there, have a nice time. I am sure it will be great. I saw some pics and it was charming.
What do you do there actually?

The most beautifull place that I was astonished in the USA was Grand Canyon [Arizona], when I hiked it down,.... Wow... I strongly recommend to everybody

I am sorry for your husband and you, but I hope you found there what you had been looking for. I was there after my high school studies. I passed one year in a high school but since I already had a graduation from CZ, they did not allow me to have the Amercian one. On the other hand I was allowed to take whatever course I wanted. It was a small and narrow-minded school with old-fashioned staff and farming study programme, which was far from my ideals and wishes. But I enjoyed the stay and travels, met some nice open-minded people and finally made my own opinion of the American dream and democracy. But that's too personal. Since then I am specializing in the English language. I studied it at a university and now I am translating, proof-reading, subtitling etc. I run a small company here and I am conducting a mixed choir :D

Hi, so what´s your "dream job"? Do you have any? I spent almost three months at home, but finally I was lucky and I found a new job. It´s not really THE job of my dreams, but it´s well paid and as we (me and ym boyfriend) want to borrow money to buy a flat, money are quite important fo me at the moment.
How do you look for a job? Do you answer ads or you look for a job with the help of recruitement agencies?
The knowledge of English is nowdays very important, that true, but it depends also on the type of the job. I find very funny, that mamy employers look for employees with great command of English, but finally a lot of them don´t use it at all or very little.

thank you. I am very busy today, yesterday we found a new flat as we have to leave the one we live in till the end of the year. We move in next weekend and because I can´t take holidays at work, I am packing almost all things today. I would never belive how many things we have!
But I am very happy because the new flat is much nicer than the old one.

I moved so many times in my life and I am  by no means a fan of packing and unpacking. I hope your boyfriend is helping you. :)
No, I am not baking any sweets, cookies or pastries for Xmas. And I have a good reason for that. First of all I am not buying into a mass consciousness that we have to do certain things in order to celebrate certain holidays. I am also healing from some longstanding issues and eliminating sugar and other meaningless, nutritious-less items from my diet is very crucial.  Also, my boyfriend is Jewish, we are celebrating Hanukkah with his family. Even though, he supports my traditions and my upbringing, there is no pressure from him to bake sweets this Christmas. :)  We are very family oriented, we call our friends a family of choice. So, our Christmas time will be spent with our family. We all will enjoy drumming, dancing, chanting and eating too, of course!
How do you celebrate Christmas with your boyfriend?  Blessings....

well, our Christmas are a bit complicated... my boyfrend is divorced and will celebrate Christmas with his children and exwife. I will celebrate Chrismas with my parents and grandmother in Ostrava. I am quite unhappy about this situation as I am very fond of traditions and I would love to celebrate Christmas with all those people TOGEHTER... my dream is my parents, grandmother, children and exwife of my boyfriend... we all under one Christmas tree. But it´s not possible.
I love Christmas traditions. I am the only one in my family who keep traditions. When I see our flat decorated with typical Christmas things, with christmas pastry... everybody happy and smiling and talking, a lot of fun, children yelling and running everywhere and impatiently waiting for Ježíšek (ee, Santa Claus ;o).
That funny, you mentioned that your boyfriend if jewish. Well, my boyfriend comes from a muslim country. He doesn´t practice islam, but Christmas are something streng to him. He understand my love for it, but doesn´t share it with me. Unfortunately he doesn´t celebrate Id (celebration by the end of Ramadan, the holy mont in islam). If he would do so, we would have two Christmas in the year :lol:
I don´t know much about Channuka, I know that it´s a celebration of light and jewish people celebrate it around "our" Christmas, but don´t know the meaning of it. Could you describe it a little for me? Thank you and whish you nice day ;)

You got an interesting family dynamic, that's for sure. But remember just because some things haven't  happened yet, that doesn't mean they aren't possible. Keep the vision of your family under one tree alive and when it's the right time things will shift. Miracles happen. I am a big believer of that. 
You are right, Hanukkah (that's the way we spell it here but yours is also correct) is a festival of Light. And the story behind this tradition? Well, I heard many versions of it and I am not sure which one to believe so I will have my boyfriend to tell me again about it and then I will pass it onto you.

I started learning of English when I was about 30. But it is more difficult when the student is older, not young :D , I forget more as when I was young and it is not enough time and power for learning after work. But I try continue and improve.

thank you for your message! I will get back to correcting it later if you don't mind (I am quite busy at the moment). You are doing really well in English, don't worry. I know it's much more difficult to learn when you are not a student aymore. I teach English adult people, so I know how difficult it is for them.  People of your age had only Russian at achool and they never really heard English when they were students. Younger people have it much easier nowadays, because English is just everywhere.
But as I said, you are doing very well. What's your job?

I work as a translator and I teach couple of hours a week.

I am not 100% sure that I have corrected everything, or that what I did correct needed to be corrected. If there is anyone more experienced than me, I too will be happy to learn from my own mistakes.

Thanks for your input Olympia. I have to say I more or less saw the same problems in the text, but I did not feel like re-writing all text :) Word "energy" is indeed much better in this context than "power".

I am happy to say I have opportunity to practice my English nearly every day, but thank you for your kind offer, I appreciate that. What I really need to do now is to improve my accent, and I have a kind friend from UK who helps me with that.

I also have to get rid of some bad habits I cought on the Interent :co: I am afraid my English used to be better before I had started chatting online, lol

I think it is a great idea to connect pelasant things with usefull things. I think the discusion on babinet what I like with English, what I need.

Allow me a question: What kind of learning find you the best for you?
I started to study of English, when I was about 3O in the intensive course. The teacher was an Irish man, he spoke only English . He knew only 1 czech word - "pivo", nothing else. When I started in this course, I was only 1 from all students, who had never learnt English before. My collegues had to translate what we should to do, what the teacher sayd. First 2 weeks were terrible for me, but later I began understand. This intensive course was the best for me. Unfortunately, I absolved only first 3 months and I can not continue more. It was not possible to study this way more, because I had at this time 2 small children and it was no more possible every afternoon 1 and half hours to study out of our house.
Later I tried to  continue in the courses with different czech teachers , no native speaker. But I found it no good for me. These teachers combinated czech sentences with English sentences, czech explaining with English explaining and it is no goo for me. I need only English for all time of the lesson.
I know, that exist one best way of lerning for me too. This way is go to England, Australia or any other English speaking country and work here and live here minimal 3 months. It is my dream for future. But now  is it no possible, my both children are studying, my both parents are coming old and all need me here now. Maybe in the long future...
I say to ever young people: Learn languages when are you young, single and full of power. These opportunities are no more in the future!
But I would like no claim, I am quiet satisfied with my age and situation and I like English.

I hope you are well :) As for your question: I am afraid it's not possible to say what teaching method works the best. People are different in the ways they learn, that's why there are also so many teaching methods and each of them works only for some people, but not for all.
For example, people with good auditory memory like to have a native speaker as their teacher from the begining. They remember what they hear, and later they are able to repeat the sentences and create their own, based on what they have heard.

People with more visual and systematic memory need the rules and principles to be explained to them (preferably in their native language) and once they understand the principle, they create their own sentences according to the rule they remember.

So it's hard to say what's the best, but the important is that you know what's the best for you. Now you need to find a way how to bring English into your every day life. I for example watch movies in English, read English books, write English letters and speak to my friends in English. English is also part of my every day job, but I know I need to work on my accent. I have asked my friend who is bilingual in Czech and English for regular conversation lessons and starting from next week, I am going to practice my accent two hours a week. It's going to be a hard work, but I am sure I am going to like it.

I have forgotten to say Hello to Blossom.Blossom nice to meet you on this chat.I'm 34 years old and never learn English at school as well.Only Russian.My first interducing to English was  working as an Au-pair in England in 1997.It was great experiance and also very difficult for me and my English family as well.At The moment my English is better then it was.But I do so many spelling mistakes I can't write properly I mean put a words together in The way that make sense and many other things.I'm sure Ronja will find out what is my problem.I hope that chat will grow up and we are going to be a friends.So see you next time and take care. :kapitulation:

Yes, English weather is awful, but imagine, that in Scotland its even worse! :) When i was in Scotland, i was dreaming about a job, im doing right now....so, im sure, ur dreams will come true one day :jojo:
Regarding the books, have you already read the book "One year in Merde"? Its guite good and also very easy to read.

But I remember town called Portree there, with nice small white colored houses, greenish green grass and bluish blue sky - really nice colors. Hi Olympia, nice to hear, u had great times in Scotland :) Unfortunately, i didn´t have the opportunity to spend a whole summer there. I came to Scotland in October and left at the end of July. It was raining a lot last year. There were only 3 sunny days in July. I was counting it :D Hope, i will be able to go there once again to see my friends and to travel a little bit. It reminds me, whe I went to see the Lochness, it was so windy, that it was almost impossible to hold the camera in my hands :D What do u think about scottish people? I think, they are friendly but people from England are more open. Maybe because of the better weather in England? ;)
